Abstract: The Illinois distribution of Scincella lateralis is portrayed on a shaded relief map. From map portrayal, this lizard appears distributionally uncommon and probably relictual in the north, common and distributionally continuous in the south. Some northern populations may be nearing local or regional extinction, while southern populations are considered secure. We speculate that northern range expansion probably took place during the warmer, drier Holocene Xerothermic interval from ca 8,000 to ca 4,000 years BP.
